What to Feed Your Dog – Species Specific is Best.

Author: Rebecca CardenMarch 27, 2017

We know many of you are animal lovers and often wonder what to feed your dog so they thrive for many happy years.

Now there’s no judgement here ok. What we write is always about education and sharing of knowledge and opinions. At the end of the day, it’s just that….an opinion but it’s through listening to others, common sense and undertaking our own research that we begin to form our own.

It baffles us as to where the idea of feeding our dogs grains came from and how feeding kibble to our dogs gained legitimacy and acceptance.

The dog food found in our supermarket aisles is the equivalent of McDonalds or KFC. It’s junk food for your pet.

That’s not an exaggeration. It is all heavily processed, loaded with cheap fillers such as GMO corn byproducts, preservatives, artificial colours and serves as a dumping ground for all manner of ingredients that would never be approved for human consumption.

Unfortunately celebrity vets such as Dr Chris and Dr Harry have made these foods for our pets acceptable. Their endorsement and smiling face gives trust to the product on which it’s placed.

The same goes for our vet’s. Not all of them granted, but many of them receive kickbacks from the manufacturers and distributors of pet food to stock them in their practice. Hello Nestle who is behind the brands Purina, Friskies, Optimum, Beneful or the Colgate/ Palmolive conglomerate behind Hills Science and Royal Canine. We give anything from Nestle and Colgate a wide berth and so should you.

To give you further insight and perspective to understand just how deep these connections with Multi National corporations go – the training of vets at some universities is also funded by pet-food manufacturers. Lectures on nutrition at a number of vet schools, and for veterinary nurses at individual practices, are also often paid for – and even taught – by these huge corporations, giving them the ideal platform to promote their products.

Follow the money trail guys.

One look at the ingredients list on any of these brands will show you something like this:

Beef, whole grain corn, barley, rice, whole grain wheat, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols, soybean meal, oat meal, poultry by-product meal, glycerin, egg and chicken flavor, mono and dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, salt, potassium chloride, poultry and pork digest, dried spinach, dried peas, dried carrots, MINERALS [zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], VITAMINS [Vitamin E supplement, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), menadione sodium bisulfite complex (Vitamin K), folic acid, biotin], choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, Red 40, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Blue 2.

To summarise that list: Highly inflammatory and neurotoxic foods which lead to behavioural issues, pancreas and kidney issues, joint degradation and cancer. The same ingredients that wreck havoc in our bodies have the same negative impact on our furry companions.

Want to know what to feed your dog so they thrive? Not this!!

How closely do you think that ingredients list resembles what a dog or cat would have eaten in the wild and considered natural for their species?

Here’s an example of what we might feed Sumo our 45kg English Pointer:

Wild caught sardines/ raw salmon offcuts or raw beef mince/ offal, raw egg yolk, coconut oil, turmeric, raw broccoli, kale, carrot, beetroot, pinch of himalayan salt. Throw it all in the blender for a rough blitz and you’re done in under 2 minutes.

The sardines are about 80cents a tin, we buy a whole side of salmon and save the trimmings for him, beef mince and offal is cheap. He will also get a bone once a week and his fav treat is a dried roo rib. Cooking their food isn’t necessary after all animals are equipped with far stronger digestive enzymes and gastric juices than we are. This is what their body is designed to handle.

It doesn’t have to be expensive and what we spend now on his food is well and truly worth it considering we can count the number of times he’s been to the vet on one hand.  He doesn’t fart, his energy is vital and knows no bounds, there are no skin issues and his weight is excellent. We fed our last boy the same way and he spanned 19 years. Not a bad innings at all.

Issues such as skin irritations, tummy troubles, anxiety and troublesome behaviour will almost certainly see an improvement as a result of a natural, species specific diet.

If your dog has been fed a processed diet for some time now, please transition them slowly to a raw food diet so that their digestive system can recalibrate. Begin by introducing some raw veg and eggs alongside their regular food and slowly cut down on the 'old food' until it's completely replaced. Consider adding a splash of apple cider vinegar to your pets meals to help their digestive juices.

Why wouldn’t you give your bestie the best chance possible to live a long, pain and disease free life with you? We hope that answers the question of what to feed your pet so they thrive.

Give it a crack and see how they take to it
