Has Candida Got A Hold On You

Has Candida got a hold on you?

It’s estimated that 70% of the population has an overgrowth of candida which is having negative health implications.

Generally it is kept in check by our friendly bacteria colonies but as soon as that balance is tipped (thanks to a bad diet or antibiotics for example) and the bad bacteria outweighs the good….. candida becomes rife and just grows and grows and grows.

It’s like a blackberry bush putting out roots and tentacles everywhere. Before you know it, it’s become rampant and really difficult to get rid of.

Don’t know what candida is?

Basically it’s an overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria caused by antibiotics, alcohol, oral contraceptives, stress and eating a diet high in carbs.

If left unchecked, this can develop into some nasty health problems-

  • Skin and nail fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot or toenail fungus
  • Low energy, chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
  • Bad breath
  • Joint pain
  • Digestive issues such as bloating & constipation.
  • Autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis.
  • Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus and brain fog
  • Skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, hives, and rashes
  • Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression
  • Vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, thrush
  • Severe seasonal allergies or itchy ears
  • Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings

We’ve experienced the damage that candida can cause first hand. Warren and I both dealt with it in years gone by thanks to rounds of antibiotics mostly.

For Bec it was repeated antibiotic therapy for severe acne, for Warren, a serious hand wound.

That’s all it takes guys. Exposure to antibiotics can throw out the gut balance enough to allow candida to take hold.

People don’t realize that candida can significantly impact upon our brain function and moods OR that it affects guys just as much as it affects the ladies.

If candida is allowed to get out of control, it becomes Systemic Candida which basically means it infiltrates your organs and takes up residence anywhere possible via your blood stream.

Yup, candida can live in your brain and that’s when things start getting serious.

To successfully treat candida, you need to do three things:

Stop the yeast overgrowth, build up the friendly bacteria, and heal your gut so that candida can no longer thrive in your system.

  1. Switch to a low-carbohydrate diet.

Sugar is what feeds yeast and without it, candida starves. Start by eliminating sugar in all of its simple forms — sweets, desserts, alcohol, and wheat based flours, remove them. Cut back to just 1 cup a day of the more complex carbohydrates, like sweet potatoes. This will help prevent the candida from growing and eventually cause it to die off.

When you ask for our Paleo menus, you will receive low carbohydrate meals that are perfect for helping you eliminate candida.

We also recommend eliminating all fermented foods initially until the candida is under control. That’s because, while it’s common knowledge that fermented foods help to feed the good bacteria, most people don’t realise that bad bacteria feed off of these foods as well.

Using diet alone could take three to six months before the candida is back under control.

  1. Supplement

There are many brilliant supplements that can aid the process of killing and eliminating candida from your system.

Caprylic Acid (from coconut oil) and essential oils are highly effective in breaking down the biofilm on the cell wall of candida allowing them to then be killed. Incorporating plenty of extra virgin coconut oil in your diet is going to help a lot as will incorporating the below essential oils.

Clove, Lemongrass and Melaleuca essential oils are powerful candida killers and can be taken internally as long as they are certified pure therapeutic grade oils. Email us for more information.

3. Rebuild The Good Bacteria.

Next, you should rebuild the good bacteria that typically keep your candida population under control. Taking anywhere from 25 to 100 billion units of probiotics on a regular basis should help to reduce the candida levels and restore your levels of good bacteria. PolyBac is a great multi strain probiotic available from health food stores.

Reintroduce fermented and cultured foods ONLY after you have down the ground work with your diet to kill off the candida.

4. Heal Your Gut

Eliminating inflammatory foods that can harm your GI tract such as white refined carbs — and introducing beneficial foods such as bone broth— will keep candida in check and where it belongs as well as dramatically improve your overall health, immune system and wellbeing.

Want to find out if you have candida overgrowth?

We definitely recommend booking an appointment with your naturopath to get a definitive answer but you can also take this quick questionnaire to determine if you display many of the symptoms associated with it.
