Yes it’s true! You can actually have organic bone broth delivered in Melbourne direct to your home. No more do you need to stink out your house with the smell of bones simmering on your stove for hours on end. As one customer said “it makes my hair smell like meat when I make it” well, no longer.

The idea of drinking bone broth to some can be a little scary and weird if you are new to the concept.

Whether you are Vegetarian or Paleo, we all need some gut support and healing at times and bone broth is a crucial part of this process. Yes that wasn't a typo...we actually have numerous Vegan and Vegetarian customers who choose to incorporate bone broth for the much needed therapeutic properties.

With this in mind, we thought we’d take the time to do our best to alleviate some possible concerns about bone broth so that you may consider trying it.

What kind of nutritional benefits does bone broth offer?

Bone broth is a source of minerals, like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium, in forms that your body can easily absorb. It’s rich in glycine and proline which are amino acids not found in significant amounts in muscle meat.

It also contains chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine, the compounds sold as supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis, and joint pain. Finally, “broth bones” include collagen, a protein found in connective tissue, which is abundant in bone, marrow, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments.  Collagen is responsible for muscle and bone repair, the health of our skin and hair and healing the gut wall.

Can I just buy broth from the supermarket?

Nope. Broth (or stock) from the supermarket relies on high temperature, fast-cooking techniques, which result in a watered down, non-gelling liquid, so you’re missing out on the benefits of a gelatin-rich broth. In addition, unnatural additives (like MSG) and flavours are often added. If you’re interested in the healing properties of bone broth, you have to take the time to make it yourself or get someone like us to make it for you.

Why are Organic, Grass Fed Bones Important?

Organic bone broth is the only bone broth you should consume. The animals have to be as healthy and happy as can be because we are what we eat. If we use bones from a diseased, hormone/antibiotic reared or malnourished animal, we will likely receive very little positive benefit from doing so.

We are taking what their 'life essence' was and drinking that in concentrated form to impart the maximum health benefit to you. An unhealthy animal is nutritionally depleted to begin with therefore cannot be of therapeutic value to us.

Factory-farmed, antibiotic reared animals given chemically laden, man made ‘food’ are the furthest thing from healthy. If antibiotics or chemicals were used in their rearing, those same substances will be passed onto us, potentially null and voiding the benefits of broth.

We also don’t want to encourage more purchasing of factory-farmed animals.

All of our bones are supplied by Cherry Tree Organics and are 100% raised on fresh organic pasture. They are never fed any grain at any stage of their lives nor are they given antibiotics or hormones. They are fully NASAA Certified Organic.

Cattle raised at ‘Cherry Tree Downs’ enjoy a low stress life in a natural environment. Ethical considerations are foremost in our suppliers mind.

What do I do with my broth?

We like to drink a mug of it, just like you would coffee or tea. In fact, a warm cup of broth is a great way to start your morning—try drinking one cup a day, every day.

Of course, you can also use it in recipes wherever it calls for broth or stock, turn it into a base for your favourite soup or as a base for a sauce. It’s also amazing for kids and will help protect their immune systems as they grow. Fussy eaters? Give them bone broth.

How long will broth keep in the refrigerator and freezer?

Keep broth in the fridge for no longer than 3-4 days. It should keep in the freezer for up to a year.

So that’s the low down on bone broth. Hopefully it puts your mind at ease and you can consider it as an option for yourself.

Why not try purchasing a cup or two to add to your usual order and give it a try? Otherwise, if you are super keen to maximise your healing protocol, order a pack of 15 to stow in your freezer and drink it everyday.

Remember, we’re here to help you be the best and healthiest version of you.
