How to beat the belly bloat is a question we’ve been asked a lot in the lead up to Christmas. Everybody wants to prevent that ‘food baby’ from growing.
We’ve all had that moment of regret after going back for that second serving of pudding, trifle AND cake…..so much cake on Christmas Day.
Our belly becomes distended and we take on the look of a beached whale or above shown frog. The stabbing pains set in and basically we feel pretty uncomfortable.
You see all the alcohol, sugary foods, proteins and everything else thrown into the mix isn’t exactly proper food combining and the result is mass fermentation taking place in our gut that leads to gas build up and all those unpleasant symptoms and that belly bloat takes hold.
Fermentation in Kombucha or Sauerkraut is awesome but fermentation isn’t supposed to happen in our gut.
Generally after an episode like this we will notice some skin irritations or pimples popping up where there are usually none. It’s our body’s way of trying to process and eliminate the side effects of all that poor fermentation.
So how do we beat the belly bloat over Christmas?
If you aren’t already taking a probiotic, find yourself a good one (look for one with more than one strain such as Polybac 8 which as the name suggests contains 8 different strains of probiotics rather than just your plain old lactobacillus acidophilus. This is an essential step to supporting gut health and strengthening your immune system, after all 80% of our immunity resides in the gut.
Digestive Enzymes are also incredibly supportive. For those with gallbladder issues or anybody with issues processing fats or proteins, make digestive enzymes your BFF. Take one or two capsules before feasting begins and it will help your body break down and process the food efficiently and metabolize it quickly. We use doTerra’s Terrazyme Complex because it’s a blend of 11 different enzymes + Peppermint, Ginger and Caraway essential oils which are all incredibly calming and soothing to the tummy.
Alternatively, try a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar (raw, unfiltered and with the mother) just before meals to stimulate your gastic juices and basically prepare for action.
Up your intake of fermented foods. As often as you can, try and incorporate some form of fermented food into your diet. Yes even on Christmas Day!!!
Not only will this help boost your gut health, but fermented foods are rich in digestive enzymes which will improve your digestion but will make things a hell of a lot easier for things to move through the body.
Some of our favourite ways to incorporate fermented foods into our diet are kombucha and sauerkraut.
Here’s an awesome idea for you- Get some Tart Cherry Juice and add a good splash of your fav Kombucha (we like Remedy Kombucha because of it’s low sugar content) and you have an instant Sparkling Lambrusco. It’s SO good and perfect to have during a long lunch.
Lastly, we never go anywhere without our bottle of doTerra DigestZen. This is a powerful combination of Tarragon, Ginger, Caraway, Anise, Peppermint, Coriander and Fennel essential oils and it called the Tummy Tamer for good reason. For acute conditions or reflux/ heartburn, try 2-3 drops in a small glass of water and down the hatch. Otherwise it can be rubbed clockwise on the abdomen diluted with a little coconut or olive oil for relief from cramping, bloating and gas.
